The Vibe Coding Audit Is Coming. Here Is What Auditors Will Look For.

Auditors have noticed. Whether your industry answers to SOC 2, HIPAA, ABA ethics rules, or PCI-DSS, the questions are changing. "How do you manage code quality?" is becoming "How do you manage AI-generated code quality?" And most teams do not have an answer.
The new audit questions

Auditors will ask:
- Who reviewed this code? Not "who prompted the AI." Who read the output, understood it, and approved it for production? If the answer is nobody, that is a control failure.
- Where is the change control documentation? Auditors expect a record of what changed, who approved it, and why. Vibe-coded commits rarely include this level of documentation.
- Can you trace this logic to a requirement? SOX and SOC 2 require traceability from business requirements to implemented code. AI-generated code often implements logic that no requirement document describes.
- What testing was performed? AI-generated tests are often written to confirm the happy path. Auditors want evidence of edge case testing, security testing, and regression testing.
- How do you prevent secrets from leaking into AI context? Security research shows that AI tools can inadvertently expose
.envfiles, private keys, and internal configurations through their context windows. Auditors want to know your content filtering policy.
The accountability gap across industries
The questions are the same. The consequences vary by industry.
Finance (SOC 2, PCI-DSS, SOX)
Financial auditors want proof that code handling transactions, customer data, and financial reports has been reviewed by a qualified human. AI code review in financial services requires prompt versioning, audit logs for every review, and risk-based routing that escalates high-risk changes (auth, payments, infrastructure) to human reviewers.
SOX specifically requires that changes to systems affecting financial reporting be documented and approved. A commit message that says "fix login" does not meet that standard.
Healthcare (HIPAA)
HIPAA auditors focus on who accessed Protected Health Information, when, and whether access was authorized. PII security research found that 73% of AI-generated applications processing user data lack explicit PII handling layers. No field-level encryption. No anonymization. No documented data retention policy.
If an auditor asks "show me the audit log for every access to patient records in the last 6 years" and the answer is "we do not have one," the conversation is over.
Legal (ABA, EU AI Act)
Legal auditors and bar associations are focused on whether AI tools handling client data protect attorney-client privilege, maintain confidentiality, and produce verified output. The EU AI Act classifies legal AI as "high-risk," requiring documented risk assessments and human oversight.
A vibe-coded contract review tool with no documentation, no access controls, and no output verification does not meet any of these standards.
What "audit-ready" AI development looks like
Enterprise guardrail frameworks describe a layered approach to making AI-generated code auditable:
- Policy checks: Automated rules that flag security, compliance, and architectural violations before code reaches review.
- Risk-based routing: High-risk changes (auth, payments, data access) require human review and approval. Low-risk changes (styling, documentation) can pass with automated checks.
- Prompt and model versioning: Track which AI model and which prompt version produced each piece of code. This creates the traceability auditors need.
- Test evidence: Unit tests, integration tests, and security tests that demonstrate the code behaves correctly, not just that it runs.
- Review documentation: For every change that reaches production, a record of who reviewed it, when, and what they checked.
Microsoft's guidance on disciplined guardrail development recommends modular instruction files that enforce coding standards, naming conventions, and architectural rules consistently across every AI interaction. This creates the standardization that auditors look for.
The 100% human review rule
The clearest recommendation across all security and compliance research is this: treat AI-generated code as output from an untrusted junior developer. Every line gets reviewed by a human who understands the business context, the security requirements, and the regulatory framework.
That does not mean reviewing every semicolon. It means reviewing every decision. Did the AI implement the right access control model? Did it handle the edge cases? Did it log what needs logging? Did it encrypt what needs encrypting?
